When baby sleep questions belong with your pediatrician.

Gift of Sleep can help a family observe and organize sleep, waking, feeding, time awake, and settling. It cannot diagnose or treat a medical condition, and a public guide cannot determine why an individual baby's sleep changed.

Contact your pediatric clinician

Use medical care for concerns about illness, breathing, feeding, growth, pain, development, or any urgent change in your baby's health. If something does not add up or worries you, a clinician is the appropriate next step.

Sleep observations can still be useful

A factual record may help you describe when the change began, what happened around sleep and feeding, and whether the pattern is becoming more frequent or intense. The record supports the conversation; it does not replace the clinician's assessment.

When the parent, not only the baby, needs support

Sleep loss after a new baby is real and hard. Feeling exhausted, overwhelmed, tearful, or anxious is common, and better infant sleep can create room for a family to recover. Gift of Sleep does not diagnose, prevent, monitor, or treat postpartum depression, anxiety, OCD, or any mental health condition, and more sleep is not a treatment for one.

If a parent is having thoughts of harming themselves or the baby, hearing or seeing things others do not, feeling unable to tell what is real, or cannot sleep even when someone else is safely holding the baby, that needs a person now — not a sleep program. This is not a moral failure or a sign of not trying hard enough.

Reach a real person right away (United States)

  • Immediate danger to a parent or baby: call 911.
  • 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline: call or text 988, any time, any day.
  • Postpartum Support International: call or text 1-800-944-4773 for perinatal mental health support.

Sleep Discovery is not the answer to a safety concern, and this page does not route a crisis into a sleep program.

Return to education when it is appropriate

When there is no medical or safety concern requiring care, Gift of Sleep can help you look at the sleep pattern without declaring a diagnosis. Start with the parent question that matches what you are seeing.

Gift of Sleep's role

Educational sleep support and factual observation across the day. Not diagnosis, medical treatment, mental health care, or a substitute for your baby's clinician.
